Our Story

Nick compares our life together to building our own spaceship that can weather the difficulties of traveling through anything.

Teammates for life: We got married in 2019.
We met in 2015 when Tina came to the USA from Germany on a teacher enrichment program. We taught at the same middle school on the same team and we both made sure we would see each other every day to talk to one another whether there was an official meeting or not. Nick was curious about Tina’s home country Germany, her language and culture and we often talked or hung out after school with other teachers. We also started texting each other. After two months, this instant chemistry turned into a relationship when we started dating in October 2015. Early on, we spent time developing habits that we continue to love like traveling, going to the movies, and eating out. We spent lots of time exploring nature in the Colorado Plateau and the Rocky Mountains in our area. In June 2016, Nick visited Germany and met Tina’s family for the first time, in July we moved in together. We got married in October 2019 and in December 2019 we bought our house.

We are both grateful for and committed to each other. We love the way that we can talk with each other, share interests, and get excited about the same things. Life with each other makes more sense, is more enjoyable, and more peaceful. Nick compares our life together to building our own spaceship that can weather the difficulties of traveling through anything. After long days and bumps in the road, there is a place to return to that makes everything make a bit more sense. We have a home where we can experience peace and better understand ourselves and the world.
Why Adoption / Our Dream

Although our journey to become parents has been a long and windy road, we are grateful it led us to the possibility of adoption.

Celebrating our nephew's 3rd birthday!
There has never been a doubt that we want to have children and become parents together.

As teachers, we choose to surround ourselves with children and teenagers every day. We are deeply passionate about supporting young people as they are finding their own voices and ways in life. At school, we also see how impactful a loving, engaged, and encouraging family is to a child’s well-being. We would love to make a difference in a child’s life by being nurturing parents.

We are grateful to have friends and siblings who are parents, and we have learned a lot from the sidelines. Watching our niece and nephews grow and spending time with our close friends and their children, has only helped us become more and more ready to embrace the challenges of parenthood ourselves.

Although our journey to become parents has been a long and windy road, we are grateful it led us to the possibility of adoption. For seven long years, we have pursued many different infertility treatments. It sent us on a rollercoaster ride of hope and despair. Although the experiences were painful, we have conquered them together and accepted the fact that having biological children just wasn’t meant to be for us. We are both excited to grow our family and become parents through adoption.
Our Promise

We are committed to being engaged parents who foster a sense of belonging through dedicated family time and experiences together.

Family is a little world made by love.
Thank you for taking in all this information about us, still strangers to you. We are beyond grateful to be considered as parents for your child.

It has been our greatest wish to have children for more than 7 years and we sincerely hope that you found in us some of what you were looking for in an adoptive family for your child.

We promise to be caring, compassionate, and loving parents. Your child will be the most precious and most important part of our family. We will do everything we can to create a safe and nurturing environment so that your child will always feel loved, supported, and safe. We are not perfect but we try to remind ourselves that we have the ability and we can learn skills to work through hardships, misunderstandings, and other unexpected things life throws at us.

We are committed to being engaged parents who foster a sense of belonging through dedicated family time and experiences together.

We will provide opportunities to engage in nature, art, culture, sports, and our diverse community. Your child will get the chance to play, read, explore, connect, socialize, and travel.

In a bi-lingual household like ours, your child will navigate different languages, cultures, and perspectives. At least once a year, we will spend time in Germany with Tina’s family and your child will be immersed in that culture. Tina plans to speak German at home and we will celebrate German traditions in the US.

Our families and close friends will support our efforts in raising your child because we believe in the idea that it takes a village.

We promise you that you will always be part of our family. Raising your child would be impossible without you and your story. Starting today, this will be a journey we go on together, in whatever way you feel comfortable.

We can’t wait to meet you!

Favorites

We love to travel and explore new places. One year, Nick's younger sister came with us to Germany and we used the opportunity to visit some European neighbors, too. Here we are in Florence, Italy.
We love to take walks around our neighborhood or along the river walk of our city. Fall is spectacular in our area.
Our cats Lavender and Frog often patiently wait around when we are in the kitchen.
We love to cook! As a special treat, we love to use ingredients from a visit to a local farm market or from our garden.
We love receiving packages from my family in Germany! Several times a year, my family sends some culinary specialties, our favorite chocolates, and gifts from home.
Nick often accompanies his brother or best friend on their (bow-)hunts in September. Nick grew up hunting with his dad and says that one day he would like to put in for a hunt as well.
For a few years now we have had bees. Nick likes to say, "We are bee-havers, not bee-keepers!" because we are still learning. This year, we managed to catch a swarm of bees. We hope they are staying!
We love European-style bread. Since a friend gave us a sourdough starter, Nick has been baking the most delicious rye bread.
Nick wouldn't say it about himself but I will: Nick is a talented potter. He loves to throw and hand-built, try out new glazes and most of all get others excited about clay.
We love to be active. Last year, we did the Manitou Incline.
On our hikes, Nick always collects sticks that he wants to use on his pottery.

Our Family

We are lucky to have a close-knit and supportive family. We love our family and we are very dedicated to keeping in touch, no matter how many miles are in the way. Nick's side of the family is spread out all over the USA but we meet up regularly for trips, visits, and celebrations. He is the second oldest of four siblings. He has two brothers and one sister. He talks to all of them on the phone since we are all in different states. His parents divorced when Nick was young. They are both remarried and he has a good relationship with both of them and their spouses. We are closest to Nick’s mom and see her and Nick’s sister and his stepdad for the holidays or joint trips. Nick keeps up with his grandma who was also a teacher by sharing stories about kids now and then. Tina’s side of the family lives in Germany. Her parents have been married for 46 years and she has one older sister. We go see them almost every summer and once Nick's sister came with us, too. Tina's sister visited us in 2024 with her family. Thanks to the internet, Tina meets her parents first and then her sister to talk about the week every Sunday. Despite the distance they are close, and always there to enjoy the good moments and support the slightly worse ones, too.

OUR HOME

We live in a small city in the Southwest region of the USA with easy access to lots of different kinds of nature. While we are in the high desert, we are also close to the Rocky Mountains and they are our favorite weekend hiking destination. We bought our house several years ago, knowing that it would be a huge renovation project, but we fell in love with its yellow bricks and the old maple trees around it. Like us, it has been through a lot and is still standing strong. However, we had no idea about what we were getting into and have only finished all of our big projects 5 years after moving in! Our house was built in the 1940s. It sits on a big corner lot and is 1600 sq. feet. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. All rooms have plenty of natural light and most have the original hardwood floors we whipped back into shape. We plotted, planned, and dreamed up ideas to turn the house into our home and learned many new skills to do so. Nick has done almost all of the renovations himself and Tina assisted whenever possible. It’s been a labor of love! Work on the garden started right away, too, and it has grown ever since with trees, bushes, flowers, and vegetables. We are proud of what we have accomplished so far and have many more ideas for future improvements. We continue to try to make it a great home for our family. The latest project is a pergola to add some extra shade for more backyard time. We can’t wait for a little one to run around and play in the garden chasing butterflies and watching hummingbirds feed on flowers

Our Cats

We love our two cats, both rescued. Lavender has been with us for 9 years and Frog for 3 years. They are two quirky cats: Lavender is a little crosseyed and Froggy has no tail. They both are very friendly and love to be around their humans. Lavender is curious and approaches guests quickly, Frog hides away from people he is unfamiliar with but he follows us around like a dog. They love to chase each other around in the yard and relax in the shade. If Lavender would allow it, Froggy would cuddle and play with her all day long.

Life Together

We love to be outdoors and active together. Hiking is one of our favorite pastimes. Tina is always eager to find a scenic view and Nick is looking for the next new stick for his pottery. During school breaks, we spend time traveling in and appreciating different parts of the US. One of our favorite trips was seeing Oregon’s rugged coastline with its beautiful beaches. Most summers we go to Germany to see Tina's family and friends and we have enjoyed traveling to other parts of Europe to experience different places and cultures, too. We always make sure to try new foods and the local favorites! We also love being at home. We like watching movies or a good show. We enjoy cooking many of our meals from scratch, as opposed to going out, and we love including ingredients that we grew in our yard ourselves. We have a lot of fun together. We like being playful and silly and goofing off. We just enjoy each other’s company, be it the silent moments together, or busy conversations, or lots of action. Life is simply better together.

About Nicholas

Nick is a kind, caring, and generous man. He has close relationships with family and friends. He is supportive, considerate, and compassionate. He is the first to rush over and help when someone is in need. He is thoughtful and loves to talk! He contemplates and reflects on life and how to make sense of our complicated world. Sometimes he jots down his thoughts to create beautiful poetry. Nicholas loves to learn and grow. He has just earned his Master's degree in Teaching Fine Arts and currently teaches history to 7th and 8th graders. He has many different interests and skills! He is a beekeeper and bread baker. He loves running and mountain biking. His biggest passion and talent is pottery! While he has all the skills to build and throw, he is humble and continues to strive to improve his artistry. You will often find him watching Instagram videos of potters from around the world, trying out different glazes, and drawing shapes and ideas into his notebooks. Nick is a YES person with a positive attitude. He loves BIG ideas and wants to make the world a better place. Nick will be the most wonderful father and role model. He will be playful, adventurous, and active, but he will also share his passion for art and deep, uplifting conversations. He will give advice and support but also challenge ideas. He will give guidance but also leave room to explore.

About Tina

Tina is originally from Germany. She came to the US ten years ago with a plan to spend a year or two teaching in American schools but when she met me she knew she wanted to stay a little bit longer which, luckily for me, eventually ended in marriage! Tina loves being a teacher. She is a very organized and focused person who cares deeply about helping the students she works with. She is a leader in her school and she helps organize events for families. She is very compassionate and goes the extra mile for her students. These are all traits that I think will make her an exceptional mother. She loves to garden and spend time in nature hiking. Our garden grows a little bit every year as she learns which plants grow best in our part of the Southwest and tries to bring a little bit of Germany to our home. Tina has a wonderful ability to go out and experience the world. She is very connected to our community and we spend time attending events and performances. She loves theater and performed with a group for 17 years in Germany. Her love for art has grown in the US and she recently became involved with our local stained glass community where she creates unique glass works! Tina has many traits that will make her an extraordinary mother. I have always known her to be a nurturing and altruistic person. When she is working with her students or planning her time away from work with family and friends, Tina takes responsibility for making sure the people around her get the most out of the experience. So far the cats and I have experienced the countless benefits of her enormous compassion and brilliant mind, followed by both of our families and friends in our community. Tina is great at many things, but I believe her gifts and talents will make her the greatest mother.
